Excerpts from Isaiah 44:1-8 - "Do not fear...for I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my spirit upon your descendants, and my blessing on your offspring." "This one will say, 'I am the Lord's,' another will be called by the name of Jacob, yet another will write on the hand, 'The Lord's,' and adopt the name of Israel."

I think this last verse (v.5) is very befitting of our prayers and our coming together for this year's General Assembly. We may find different ways that we claim the spiritual heritage of our calling. We may grasp onto a variety of ministries that we value and hold of highest importance. We may even recognize that we have much in common with those who claim a different name than ourselves. It is a grand reminder that many have answered the call of God's claim on each of us.

In my meeting and working with people, both acquaintances and strangers, I have often asked myself to seek Christ in my brother or sister. This is certainly not a new approach for Christians. However, I wonder if, when I know a person is a sister or brother in Christ, I should be asking a different question? Perhaps we would all be stronger in our faith, if each of us asked one another "How will we claim the name of the Lord our God?" "What are we doing this day that put's God's imprint on our hearts, souls and lives for all the world to learn from and find hope in?" Those are questions that perhaps I have avoided too frequently, questions that I should seek out from mentors and colleagues...Questions that should shape every gathering of the body of Christ.

Mark 4:26-27 "Jesus also said, 'The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. '"

Lately I'm giving up trying to figure out how prayer works, or even so much wondering what to pray for. It's seems like it's the pure putting in of time that's important over the long haul. I don't really know how praying about the Indy assembly will work, or really even what we should pray for. But could we just be faithful to scatter some prayer seeds? My time to pray for GA is at 2:09pm. I've made it about 3 days a week so far. I'm aiming to inch that up to 5 days a week.

Is GA on your prayer list? Let's just check it off, chuck out the seeds, put in the moments. Then go about our regular lives.

I will meet you on the last day of Assembly at the closest place serving Shiner Bock after the last worship service. Then we'll look over Assembly and see- did our prayers grow a deeply-rooted movement for God to freely work among us?

If so, you and I can scratch our heads and laugh with Jesus-- "How did that happen?!"

By the way if you want to pray for the GA....pray for the committee I am chairing. I am the chair of the Local Area Missions Committee. We are busy planning meaningful experiences for the many volunteers coming from the U.S. and Canada. And our hope is that we will leave a very positive footprint on Indianapolis that will last long after the folks go back home.
Encourage your folks to volunteers and obviously to come to GA.

Local area missions maybe very important for us to reach out into the Indy community and bring in the folks who are in need of the table. Outside of the local church, this could be the most important way for Disciples to witness the grace, love, and compassion of Jesus to the Indy community.

Pray that Brooks will be bold in her vision.
Pray that the folks of vision and passion wind up with her working together in concert.
Pray that they get a grand BHAG and that it keeps them up at night. Big Hairy Audacious Goal that comes from a Bigger Hairier more Audacious God.
Pray that youth groups and many adults will be stirred to build upon the work that Brooks and her team has laid out.

God be with you as move forward with this Spirit-led prompting to call us to prayer.
